Aromatherapy Play Dough

The cold weather usually means more time indoors. Entertain your kids this season by turning playtime into learning time by making aromatherapy play dough! This activity is a great way for children to learn about aromatherapy and essential oils. Use a variety of oils and colours to help kids learn new scents. Some fun essential oils could include Wild Orange, Bergamot, Balance, Adaptiv or Lavender.

Playdough Recipe:

2 cups flour

1 cup table salt

4 tsp cream of tartar

2 cups of water

2 Tbsp vegetable oil or other carrier oil

5 drops of essential oil

Food colouring of your choice (optional)

Mix all the ingredients together in a big pot. Stir the mixture well and then place on the stove over low/medium heat.

• At first, the mixture is quite runny, but after a few minutes of cooking on the stove, it forms a dough.

• Keep stirring continuously, making sure to stir & scrape the bottom of the pot so it does not burn.

• In a few minutes, the mixture will be like dough.

Note: Don’t overcook as it will lead to dry play dough.

• Remove from heat and cool the dough on a silicone mat for a few minutes. Knead dough like bread a few times.

• Divide the dough into 6 (about 6 oz.) portions then add food colouring, a few drops at a time until desired shade is reached. (See individual recipes for colouring suggestions.)

• Add essential oils to each 6 oz. portion and knead until thoroughly combined. (See individual recipes for oil suggestions.)

• Store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for months of fun!
